Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a difference between an official Certificate and a jewellery shop appraisal?
Yes, there is a very big difference. To illustrate the point there is a phrase commonly used in the Diamond trade; ‘A GIA certificate is a tool for buying diamonds while a jewellery shop appraisals is a tool for selling!’. Generally an appraisal that is provided by a retail jeweller, even if they are very reputable and suitably qualified, is primarily for insurance purposes and usually has an inflated valuation as well as an inflated clarity grade and colour.
What types of certificates do you accept?
We prefer the Gemological Institute of America’s (GIA) diamond grading reports as these are considered the most consistent and strict in their grading. However, we also accept and consider all other certificate including the European Gemological Laboratory (E.G.L) and HRD (Hoge Raad Voor Diamant) diamond grading reports. There are lots of other diamond certificates offered by various companies, however, only a few are considered reliable and widely used. Among those considered reputable internationally three certificates stand out: GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and HRD (Hoge Raad Voor Diamant) and EGL (European Gemological Laboratory).
Why is a diamond grading report from the GIA preferable?
A GIA diamond grading report is considered the world’s best credentials for a diamond. Most diamond dealers around the world often buy and sell diamonds sight unseen based strictly on the GIA grading report.
Do you buy diamonds that are not certified?
Yes, many of our customers have diamonds that were either inherited or that they received as gifts, and do not have a certificate. One of our gemologists will perform a complete evaluation of your diamond upon receipt and will call you with our findings and purchase offer.
Do you purchase Fancy Colour diamonds?
Yes, we purchase natural fancy colour diamonds. Fancy colour diamonds exist in a rainbow of yellows, reds, pinks, blues, greens, purples and all shades in-between.
Do you purchase lab-created or simulated diamonds?
No. DiamondTrader.ie only purchases natural diamonds. Lab-created and simulated diamonds have little to no resale value.
How much can I get for my diamond?
Obviously this is the biggest question when you are considering selling a diamond or piece of diamond jewellery. The value of a diamond is primarily determined by its 4C’s:
- CARAT: How much does the diamond weigh?
- COLOUR: Does the diamond look yellow?
- CLARITY: Can you see any imperfections (known as inclusions) in the diamond?
- CUT: How well does a diamond reflect light?
Once these four factors are known, we can determine how much your diamond is worth. To make this process as quick as possible we have come up with the diamond price quote system that will enable us to quickly place a value on your diamond.
You are under no obligation to sell us your diamond, and the quote is free. Try our diamond price quote now.
How do I get paid?
After you accept our offer to purchase your diamond, you can be paid in as little as 12 hours. Our standard payment method is by crossed bank cheque. These can be lodged with any financial institution in Ireland.
For sellers who need the payment a little faster, we can also offer payment via Electronic Funds Transfer which will place the funds in your account in just a few hours (sometimes instantly).
All our standard payment methods are free and all payments are issued immediately.
Cash payment can also be arranged by prior agreement and are subject to a small handling charge.
Will you purchase my diamond?
We are interested in purchasing all shapes of diamonds, round, square, heart shaped etc. We buy all shapes and colours, all the time.
We are currently looking to purchase diamonds that are at least 0.75 ct in weight or larger. If you have a ring with multiple diamonds, the main diamond must be 0.75 ct or larger.
We do not purchase diamonds that:
- Have been clarity enhanced (CE)
- Laser drilled
- Colour treated
- Are of SI3, I1, I2 or I3 clarity
- Contain black eye visible inclusions
Do you purchase rings?
Yes – if your diamond is set in a ring or some type of jewellery we will purchase the diamond and the jewellery. The price paid for the ring itself will be based on the weight and purity of the metal plus the value of the diamonds.
If you are selling us a diamond and have some old gold, such a broken chain, single earrings or rings that are no longer in style we will purchase them at the same time as we buy your diamonds.
How do I find my diamond information?
When diamonds are sold, they often come with a report or certificate that has the diamond’s vital statistics. These certificates are issued by diamond grading labs such as GIA, EGL, HRD, AGS or IGI. There are dozens of smaller lesser known labs as well. If you have a certificate issued by a diamond lab, it should contain enough information to use our diamond price quote to get a value for your diamond.
You may have an appraisal done by an independent appraiser, or the jewellery shop where your diamond was purchased. These may or may not have all the details necessary to use our diamond price quote system.
Do you purchase gold?
Yes! We also purchase gold & platinum. If you have old gold sitting in the bottom of your jewellery box we can purchase it at the same time you are selling a diamond.
Will you take the diamond out of my ring?
If your diamond is currently set into a ring or other piece of jewellery, it will be inspected by a gemologist in the setting. We will not remove the diamond from its setting for the inspection. Should you decide not to sell us your diamond, the diamond or jewellery would be returned to you in its original condition.
We do not currently sell diamonds to members of the general public.
We sell our stock through our international network of Diamond Dealers and often stones that we sell are re-cut to correct any damage or reset in modern and fashionable settings.
I’d like to sell my Diamond but do not have a certificate. How can I proceed?
DiamondTrader.ie is interested in your diamond even if it does not have a certificate. just provide us with as much information as you have available and we’ll let you know if we’re interested in inspecting the item and making an offer.
Our GIA Graduate Gemologist will inspect your item, prepare a report on the specific characteristics and determine its market value. Based on this information we will decide whether to make you an offer on the item or we will discuss alternative ways of selling your item.
